Description:
The St. Matthew Passion of 1758 exemplifies various aspects of Georg Philipp Telemann's late Passion work: his changing recitative style in the 1750s, the sometimes considerable shortening of the Gospel texts, the use of new chorale texts - including those by Christian Fürchtegott Gellert and Christlob Mylius - and the division of the Evangelist part between two singers. Telemann also reused the Bible recitatives and turban choruses from this Passion in two later Passions, a procedure which he generally used in his late Passions and which can be traced here as an example.
The surviving situation is favorable, as - in addition to a copy of the score by Georg Michael Telemann - there is a Hamburg set of parts by Telemann's main copyist Schieferlein. This means that colla-parte leads and the text underlay have survived throughout, only an original figured organ part is missing.
The preface deals with all these aspects exhaustively and also discusses practical performance issues in detail. The choral texts and melodies are also referenced. The volume contains a complete facsimile of the Passion text, selected illustrations from the musical sources, the critical report and the music section with a brief appendix. It offers a broad and solid basis for research into Telemann as a church composer; a magnificent work from Telemann's late creative period is made accessible to music practitioners.
