A valuable addition to the requiem repertoire: Biber's Requiem in F minor is one of the most impressive settings of the requiem mass of the 17th century. The specific occasion for the composition of the work, which can be dated to after 1692, is unknown. The dark timbre of the key of F minor is intensified by the instrumental scoring with two violins, three violas, basso continuo and three trombones (colla parte with the choir). Biber translates the pictorial language of the Requiem text with a variety of musical and expressive means. The intensity of the musical figures used to express lamentation and mourning is impressive. In the course of the edition work, the main source for this composition, which was thought to have been lost, surprisingly reappeared. The work, which is of medium difficulty for the choir with a clear string section, can also be performed well by amateur choirs.
