A valuable addition to the requiem repertoire: Biber’s Requiem in F minor is one of the most impressive musical settings of the Mass for the Dead from the 17th century. The specific occasion for the composition of this work, which can be dated to after 1692, remains unknown. The somber timbre of the key of F minor is heightened by the instrumental ensemble consisting of two violins, three violas, basso continuo, and three trombones (colla parte with the choir). Biber translates the evocative language of the Requiem text into music using a variety of expressive musical means. The intensity of the musical phrases used to express lament and grief is particularly striking. During the editorial work, the primary source for this composition—which had been believed lost—surprisingly resurfaced. This work, which is of medium difficulty for the choir and features a straightforward string section, is also well-suited for performance by amateur choirs.
