Description:
Homilius' oratorio passions are among the last compositions of this type from the 18th century. The role of the choir in the oratorio passions is largely limited to the chorales and folk choruses; only the endings of the passions offer opportunities for larger-scale choral movements. In the St. John Passion, the final chorus takes up the outstanding significance of the crucifixion in the Gospel of John as an exaltation.
The free parts of the composition make use of the usual forms: da capo arias predominate.
