Description:
Handel composed the "Te Deum" in B flat major HWV 281 in 1718 for the later Duke of Chandos. The work therefore became known as the "Chandos Te Deum", but is referred to here as the "Te Deum" for Cannons after the place of its first performance.
The unusual scoring with a flute, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, two violins and basso continuo as well as a choir (consisting of soprano, three tenors and bass) probably resulted from the forces available on site. Three tenors can also be found in the masque "Acis and Galatea", which was composed at almost the same time. The work is reminiscent of the Utrecht "Te Deum" in some respects, but the smaller instrumentation gives it a more chamber music-like character.
This edition is based on the Urtext of the "Hallische Händel-Ausgabe" (BA 10708), which offers the complete critical musical text of the "Te Deum" for the first time.
