Description:
Eberlin's programmatic setting of the offertory "Terra tremuit" was composed for the festive liturgy of Easter Sunday at Salzburg Cathedral, which was a center of polyphonic offertory settings in the 17th and 18th centuries. Verses 9 and 10 from Psalm 76 (75), with their vivid description of the earthquake and the earth falling silent, are Eberlin's text template for the offertory. Eberlin expresses the description of the earthquake in the string parts with a notated tremolo and in the vocal parts with the syllabic staccato at the word "tremuit". The resurrection is set to music by the ascending sequence of notes at the words "dum resurgeret". An Alleluia concludes the work.
