Description:
The three violin concertos BWV 1041–1043 are among Johann Sebastian Bach's best-known and most popular instrumental works today; at the same time, they are among the standard works of the concert repertoire.
The mixture of ritornello and episode, which is typical of Bach's concertos, is found above all in the first movement of the A minor Concerto, which is particularly densely worked contrapuntally, in which the concise main theme in the tutti strings is regularly heard with the accompaniment of the solo violin. The solemn first movement is followed by a harmonically far-reaching Andante, in which an expressive cantilena develops over an almost omnipresent bass theme. The final movement is designed as a fugal gigue, the character of which is determined by the whipping 9/8 rhythm and the constantly increasing virtuosity of the solo violin.
The present Urtext edition is based on the "New Bach Edition".
