Description:
Reinhard Keiser, a composer who was highly esteemed by his contemporaries (especially for operas), also composed a considerable number of sacred works such as cantatas, masses, passions and oratorios. Among these works, most of which have unfortunately been lost, the "Dialogus von der Geburt Christi" occupies a special position: After all, it is Keiser's only surviving Christmas oratorio and as such is certainly a welcome alternative in the Christmas repertoire of our time. The well-known Christmas chorales appear in opulent scoring and figurative movements, while the intimate tone of a nativity play predominates in other movements. The finely nuanced instrumentation is contrasted with a flowing, easily singable choral setting.
