Description:
Psalm 147 "Lauda Jerusalem" has an important place in the church year, among other things in vespers on Marian feasts. Antonio Vivaldi's only setting of this Vespers Psalm has some peculiarities: the work is scored for two choirs; both vocal choirs are accompanied by an instrumental choir of strings and basso continuo. In contrast to many other psalm compositions by Vivaldi, the setting is not set in several movements, but is composed in a single movement. Solo and tutti sections are contrastingly juxtaposed. To preserve musical unity, Vivaldi resorts to a kind of ritornello form.
Vivaldi's pupils at the Venetian "Ospedale della Pietà" performed the work in the 1730s. It can be seen from the composer's autograph that the solo passages were performed in duplicate, probably for pedagogical reasons. Even today, these solo parts can be mastered well by one or more good choral sopranos.
