Description:
Psalm 147 "Lauda Jerusalem" has an important place in the church year, including in vespers on Marian feasts. Antonio Vivaldi's only setting of this vesper psalm has some special features: The work is scored for two choirs; both vocal choirs are each accompanied by an instrumental choir of strings and basso continuo. In contrast to many of Vivaldi's other psalm compositions, the setting is not in several movements but is composed in a single movement. Contrasting solo and tutti sections are juxtaposed. To maintain musical unity, Vivaldi resorts to a kind of ritornello form. Vivaldi's students at the Venetian "Ospedale della Pietà" performed the work in the 1730s. The composer's autograph shows that the solo passages were performed in two parts, probably for pedagogical reasons. Even today, these solo parts can be performed by one or more good choral sopranos.
