Description:
Johann Sebastian Bach's "Magnificat" BWV 243 was composed in its first form in E flat at the very beginning of Bach's Leipzig tenure, possibly for the Visitation of Mary on July 2, 1723. A performance on Christmas Day 1723 is well documented. Following a Leipzig tradition, Bach added four Christmas interludes for this occasion.
It was not until the 1730s that Bach reworked the "Magnificat" into the well-known version in D. He changed the instrumentation, but above all the biggest practical performance problems of the E flat major version were alleviated. The "Magnificat" is included in this version in D in the critical Carus edition by Bach expert Ulrich Leisinger, based on Bach's autograph score. The piano reduction contains the interludes for Christmas performances as an appendix; the score and parts for the interludes are available separately (Carus 31.243/50).
