Scored for SATB choir with additional wind parts by Joseph von Eybler; trombone parts added by Ignaz Xaver Ritter von Seyfried; revised by Otto Nicolai (1843). / Pergolesi’s last major composition, the "Stabat Mater" from 1736, became one of the most popular sacred works of the late Baroque and early Classical periods immediately after the composer’s death. Numerous prints and copies spread this icon of Italian sacred music throughout Europe. Arrangements soon followed, such as those by J. S. Bach ("Tilge, Höchster, meine Sünden" BWV 1083, Carus 35.302/00, Carus 35.302/50), Johann Adam Hiller, and Abbé Vogler. The most popular arrangement was created around 1795 for the Vienna Court Orchestra by Joseph von Eybler, who expanded the original’s two-part upper voice part into a four-part choir with obbligato solos and added woodwinds to the string part. Ignaz von Seyfried added obbligato trombones to this version in 1830, and Otto Nicolai revised it in 1843, providing it with detailed dynamic markings. Of moderate difficulty to perform, the Viennese version offers all choirs eager to explore new works a rare and valuable addition to their repertoire.
