Description:
The anthem "How beautiful are the feet", also known as "Anthem on the Peace", was premiered in 1749 by the Chapel Royal in London at a thanksgiving service on the occasion of the Peace of Aachen, which ended the War of the Austrian Succession. At the subsequent ceremony, Handel's fireworks music was also heard for the first time. As is often the case with occasional works, the composer drew on texts and music from earlier compositions in all four movements. For example, the "Anthem on the Peace" contains several parts from the "Messiah", but also from other Anthems and the "Occasional Oratorio". Handel therefore did not produce an independent autograph for this work.
The Urtext edition as part of the Halle Handel Edition offers for the first time a scholarly-critical edition of the musical text of the version that was presumably heard at the premiere, supplemented by two movements, which are variants.
