Description:
Bach's Mass in B minor is one of his largest and most ambitious works. It occupied the composer for over two decades: from the Sanctus (1724) to the "Missa" of 1733 and the supplementary Ordinary movements from the last years of his life. With its wealth of forms in arias, duets and concertante and fugal choruses, the work thus represents the essence of his profound ability and personal style. The "greatest musical work of art of all times and peoples" (as the first editor Hans Georg Nägeli enthusiastically put it in 1818) and one of the most demanding choral symphonic works ever is now available in a top-class recording with Frieder Bernius, the Stuttgart Chamber Choir and the Stuttgart Baroque Orchestra (Carus 83.211), based on the principles of historical performance practice.
