Description:
Written in 1727 for a "speech of praise and mourning" for Electress Christiane Eberhardine in Leipzig's university church, the music of the Trauerode is known today primarily through reconstructions of Bach's St. Mark Passion, in which large parts of this cantata were probably reused, but of which only the text has survived. The Trauerode is one of Bach's most fascinating and powerful vocal compositions. Although Gottsched's text is tied to a specific occasion, its literary quality sets it apart positively from many secular cantata texts and should not stand in the way of a performance of this impressive cantata in concert.
