Compared to the flute concertos GWV 310-312, the Concerto in E Major GWV 320 signals even more clearly that the music which Graupner notated in his manuscript does not capture the work fully. With its long, sustained notes and the absence of any virtuosic ornamentation, the written-out flute part initially offers a snapshot of the movement’s framework. The ad-dition of improvised ornamentation is essential, however, to get to the bottom of Graupner's intentions. In this respect, this concerto is particularly suitable for the study of historical performance practice issues...
