Antonio Vivaldi's twelve concertos op. 4, known as "La Stravaganza", were first mentioned in 1711 in the preface to "L'Estro Armonico" op. 3 as a collection of "Concerti a 4". They were not published until 1716 by Estienne Roger in two volumes, each containing six concertos. Contrary to what was originally announced, "La Stravaganza" is not just a collection of concertos for solo violin with string accompaniment. In five concertos, the soloist is reinforced by a second solo violin or even a solo cello (Concerto No. 7).

Numerous reprints of "La Stravaganza" testify to the distribution and popularity of the concertos up until the 1930s. In addition to the printed tradition, there is an important manuscript tradition that includes alternative versions of seven of the concertos, some of which come from Johann Georg Pisendel's music library.

This edition of "La Stravaganza" is not only the first scholarly-critical edition, but also the only complete edition available. In addition to the twelve concertos which have survived in the Roger edition, Bärenreiter presents a concerto in score, piano reduction and parts which is included in the edition published by the English publisher Walsh & Hare in 1728, as well as alternative versions - without viola - of concertos no. 6 (Libro Primo) and no. 11 (Libro Secondo) which have survived in manuscript sources.
