In the cantata "Ich armer Mensch, ich Sündenknecht", Bach has created a high degree of expressiveness with minimal vocal means (solo tenor, only the final chorale in four voices). The last three movements come from an earlier, lost work by Bach, presumably a Passion. At the same time, these movements seem to point ahead to Bach's "St. Matthew Passion", which was composed shortly after this cantata, on Good Friday in 1727: the text "Erbarme dich" (Have mercy) can be found there in a central position, as can the chorale verse "Bin ich gleich von dir gewichen" (I am about to depart from you).
