Description:
Like many of Pietro Metastasio's libretti, "Ezio" has been set to music time and again - in addition to Handel, also by Nicola Porpora in 1728 and Christoph Willibald Gluck in 1750. As the historical events from late antiquity surrounding the Western Roman commander Aëtius, who defeated the Huns under Attila on the Catalaunian fields, were largely forgotten in the 18th century, they only form the backdrop for highly dramatic "sex and crime" on the operatic stage. In contrast to the Roman model, "Ezio" remains alive during the lieto fine, as audiences were able to see for themselves for the first time in London on January 15, 1732. Nevertheless, there were only five performances of the work during Handel's lifetime, the overture of which Handel took from his unfinished opera "Titus l'Empereur".
The new piano reduction is based on volume II/26 of the "Hallische Händel-Ausgabe".
