The genesis of the cantata Wer mich liebet, der wird mein Wort halten BWV 59 is somewhat enigmatic. The surviving parts attest to a performance on 1 Whitsun 1724, but the score was written well before Bach moved to Leipzig, which has led to the assumption that Bach had already performed the cantata in the Leipzig University Church before taking up his post as Thomaskantor. In any case, the cantata, which has only four movements and is based on a text by Erdmann Neumeister, is decidedly chamber-musical, although the ensemble of trumpets and timpani in the opening duet is not missing. The chorale - the only choral movement - is in third position after an accompagnato, and the cantata ends with an aria for solo violin, bass and basso continuo. With the exception of the accompagnato, Bach later transplanted all the movements into other church cantatas. This may be an indication that the unusual form ultimately did not satisfy Bach (or his listeners?), but for us today it is one of the very special cantatas for this very reason.
