The opening movement of Bach's choral cantata on Luther's "Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir" BWV 38 for the 21st Sunday after Trinity in 1724 belongs to a group of cantatas whose opening chorus is not concertante, but entirely in the style of a motet; the instruments merely reinforce the singing voices. The archaic character of the movement is emphasized by the addition of a trombone quartet. After a suspenseful recitative and an aria full of harmonic sharpness, a completely unusual recitative follows, in which the chorale melody forms the bass foundation for the voice part. A second aria, which - no less unusually - is performed as a trio accompanied only by the continuo, leads to the final chorale, which, in accordance with the first line of the text "Ob bei uns ist der Sünden viel", begins immediately with a harsh dissonance.
