Description:
The cantata Christ unser Herr zum Jordan kam BWV 7 for St. John's Day (24.6.) 1724 is the third cantata of the choral cantata year begun on the 1st Sunday after Trinity (11.6.1724). It is based on Martin Luther's hymn of the same name, which focuses on baptism but not on the Gospel text (John's birth and Zacharias' hymn of praise). The powerful opening movement combines a cantus firmus motet with a sparkling violin concerto. The violin concerto - now with two violins - returns in the second aria, while the first aria as a continuo aria is interspersed with 32nd-note descents in the continuo, which probably represent the baptismal water being poured out. A two-part recitative (narrator: secco, words of Jesus: accompagnato) and an alto aria with string tutti lead to the four-part final chorale.
