Like most of his works, Johann Sebastian Bach's "St. John Passion" has not survived in a definitive version - e.g. as a printed edition or fair copy - but in four different versions. Arthur Mendel's edition provides an edition that is as authentic, uniform and artistically optimal as possible. The appendix shows all the essential variants of the other versions in a clearly structured manner. Appendix 2 ("The movements belonging only to version II") of the score is included in the choral score.
