Description:
The premiere of Gluck's "Alceste" marked the reopening of the Vienna Burgtheater after the period of mourning decreed by the death of Archduchess Maria Josepha.
The inspiration for the libretto, which despite the inclusion of the miraculous is entirely related to death and the afterlife, was probably given to Calzabigi by the death of Empress Maria Theresa's husband. The librettist possibly saw the Euripidean Alkestis as a companion to the fate of the imperial widow, who was highly revered by the people. Inspired by ancient Greek tragedies, Gluck also attached great importance to the unity of the whole and the interplay of all factors, including costumes and stage design, in this work. He attached great importance to integrating the chorus into the action on stage.
This edition is a carefully revised and corrected piano reduction, adapted to the current Bärenreiter standards.
