Description:
Beethoven's Piano Sonata in B flat major op. 22, composed in 1800, marks the end of his first creative phase. The only surviving manuscript source of the work, which was entitled "Grande Sonate" in the first edition, is the copyist's engraver's copy, from which the first edition differs in numerous details. Beethoven held the sonata in particularly high esteem: it "washed up", as he proudly wrote to his publisher Franz Anton Hoffmeister on January 15, 1801. In fact, the work presents itself as the quintessence of classical formal conception: the four-movement sonata, evenly proportioned and masterfully structured, makes high demands on flawless technical brilliance and playful ease.
