Description:
In 1768, Gluck was asked by Empress Maria Theresa to compose a festive opera in Parma on the occasion of the wedding of her daughter Maria Amalia to Ferdinand of Spain. The composer accepted the commission and created the "Le feste d'Apollo", consisting of several one-act plays, including the "Atto d'Orfeo", a new version of the Azione teatrale "Orfeo ed Euridice", which had been premiered in Vienna in 1762 and was rearranged for Paris in 1774. Gluck transposed the title role upwards for the well-known soprano castrato Giuseppe Millico, so that, for example, Orpheus' famous aria "Che farò senza Euridice" is in E flat major instead of C major.
