Description:
The surviving parts for the cantata "Christ lag in Todes Banden" BWV 4.2 were used for a performance on Easter Sunday, April 1, 1725; this performance was presumably an emergency solution, as the choral cantata cycle of the years 1724/25 breaks off abruptly shortly before Easter 1725; as a choral cantata, BWV 4 was of course ideally suited to fill this gap, although this choral cantata without recitatives follows a different (older) model. A Leipzig performance as early as Easter Sunday (1 April) 1724 was long assumed, but is now doubted. Although no pre-Lipzig sources have survived, the cantata's style points to a much earlier date (Mühlhausen 1707/08?). Unlike the choral cantatas of 1724/25, BWV 4 does not contain any newly composed texts; all movements are based on verses from Martin Luther's chorale. Not least because of its timeless text, this powerful Easter cantata is one of Bach's most popular vocal works today.
