Description:
The fact that the "opéra comique", rooted in the folk art of French vaudeville, was brought to one of its high points in Vienna by Gluck, an Italian composer from the Upper Palatinate, clearly shows the close relationships and interdependence of European musical life in the middle of the 18th century. With "Merlins Insel oder Die verkehrte Welt", Gluck created an enchanting buffo work that draws its charm not only from the colourful music with its loving details in instrumentation and characterization, but also from the juxtaposition of real, mythological and fairytale-like figures and the socio-critical undertones of the libretto. The edition follows the Gluck-Gesamtausgabe Abt. IV, Band 1, edited by Günter Haußwald.
