Louis Vierne (1870-1937) led the genre of the organ symphony to its stylistic peak. His circle of pupils included Marcel Dupré, whose pupil Thierry Escaich is a contributor to this complete edition.

The 4th Symphony is one of the most important works of organ music.
The composition was previously dated to the three summer months of 1914.
However, a letter Vierne wrote on June 23, 1914, which was discovered by the editor, refutes any connection to the war. The 4th Symphony could then be reclassified, which also led to a new evaluation and interpretation of its content in the context of the present edition (see the detailed preface).

The registration of this key work of organ literature is partly reminiscent of César Franck's Choral in B minor. In general, Franck's influence is already emphasized by the reviewer of the first performance.
