Louis Vierne (1870-1937) was a private pupil of César Franck and was appointed titular organist at Notre-Dame (Paris) in 1900. Numerous concert tours throughout Europe and the USA made him world-famous.

Vierne's organ compositions are masterpieces of organ music and a central component of the demanding organ repertoire. The genre of the organ symphony in particular led Vierne to its stylistic peak.

The "Pièces en style libre pour orgue ou harmonium", consisting of a total of 24 pieces in two volumes (Livre I-II), are comparatively shorter and easier to play than the "24 Pièces de fantaisie en quatre suites". These "miniatures" of a more meditative character are equally suitable for organ lessons and concerts.

The six Vierne symphonies are stylistic highlights of French organ symphonies that began with César Franck. Vierne's sixth and last organ symphony, op. 59, was composed in the summer of 1930. In this symphony, his well-known chromatic style reaches the limits of traditional major-minor tonality.
