The 6th Symphony op. 59 is Vierne's last major work conceived for the organ of Notre-Dame. In addition to the "Quatre poèmes grecs op. 60" (for voice and harp or piano), the "Ballade du désespére" op. 61 (for tenor and orchestra or piano), only the sombre "Stèle pour un enfant défunt" op. 58, no. 3 and the mass "basse pour les défunts" op. 62 were composed in the following period. In the manuscript, Vierne dates the symphony - it is the last organ work that he recorded himself - to Roquebrune, September 15, 1930. In that summer, which he spent at the country house of his friend the Richepin family in Carnolès near Menton on the Mediterranean, Vierne also played an organ concert in the cathedral of Monaco. The symphony appeared in print in the first days of September of the following year.
