Louis Vierne (1870-1937) was a pupil of César Franck. From 1892, he substituted for Charles-Marie Widor at St. Sulpice (Paris) before being appointed titular organist at Notre-Dame (Paris) in 1900. His circle of pupils included Nadia Boulanger and Maurice Duruflé.

Vierne's organ compositions are masterpieces of organ music and a central component of the demanding organ repertoire.

The collections "Pièces de Fantaisie" and "Pièces en style libre" were widely disseminated. Vierne's piano works are compositionally equivalent to his organ works. They are presented for the first time in a complete critical edition, which also contains the previously unpublished works and those attributed to him. His musical language was largely influenced by his teacher César Franck; there are also compositional elements by Claude Debussy.

The " Pièces de fantaisie " were each combined into suites in a total of four " Livres ", but the character of a collection of individual movements predominates. Each movement bears a title that refers to something extra-musical, as is familiar from works of 19th century piano music. The pieces have become some of Vierne's most frequently performed works in the context of concertante organ playing.
