Louis Vierne (1870-1937) was a private pupil of César Franck and was appointed titular organist at Notre-Dame (Paris) in 1900. Numerous concert tours throughout Europe and the USA made him world-famous.

Vierne's organ compositions are masterpieces of organ music and a central component of the demanding organ repertoire. The genre of the organ symphony in particular led Vierne to its stylistic peak.

The collection " Pieces de Fantaisie ", consisting of a total of 24 fantasy pieces in four part volumes (Livre I-IV), found worldwide distribution. With its varying degrees of difficulty, it is aimed at professional organists as well as advanced pupils and students. The collection consists primarily of individual movements that can be used in a variety of performance situations.

The "Pieces en style libre pour orgue ou harmonium", consisting of a total of 24 pieces in two volumes (Livre I-II), are shorter and easier to play. These are "miniatures" of a more meditative character, equally suitable for organ lessons and concerts.
