Louis Vierne (1870-1937) led the genre of the organ symphony in particular to its stylistic peak.

The 5th Symphony, the most extensive of his six symphonies, was erroneous in the first edition. The present edition is based on the composer's autograph as the main source. In contrast to previously published editions, Helga Schauerte-Maubouet also presents a fragmentary handwritten list of corrections as a secondary source, making it possible to confirm Vierne's late changes to details in the autograph.
In the preface, the editor sheds light on the biographical background and goes into detail about the genesis of the work. Using previously unpublished correspondence by Vierne, she documents the exact dating of the individual movements for the first time.
